Local Student Athletes Among Those Using Performance-Enhancing Drugs

Underage students across South Florida are among those who were handed illegal performance-enhancing drugs by Biogenesis Clinic founder Tony Bosch.

Bosch and six associates were arrested Tuesday and face federal drug charges.

And, United States Attorney Wilfredo Ferrer says prosecutors are particularly concerned about the youngest athletes, saying Bosch provided illegal drugs to students as young as 15 years old.

Ferrer says the motivation was solely money, and recruiters enticed the young athletes with promises of great success.

In light of the scandal, the Florida High School Athletic Association several months ago did change its anti-drug-use policy to include human growth hormones and other steroids and Schedule-3 narcotics.

Drug testing, though, is up to each school district.

None in the state has implemented a drug testing policy for these particular drugs.
