The people building the PortMiami tunnel are promising this time they'll be ready to open in the week of August 3rd.

The road under Government Cut was supposed to open on May 19th, but soon after they realized the giant exhaust fans weren't working properly, and a fiberglass drainage pipe was splintered.

Miami Access Tunnel Project Vice President Chris Hodgkins says most of the work is now complete.

All that's left are some final tests, inspections and synchronizations.

Hodgkins says once the tunnel opens, he predicts up to 16,000 trucks a day will use it.

Those big rigs will no longer have to drive through downtown Miami to get to the MacArthur Causeway.

Because the contractor missed its May completion date, it's having to pay a more than $6-million fine.
