Rubin "Hurricane" Carter has died after a long battle against prostate cancer.

In June 1966, three white people were shot by two black men at a bar in Paterson New Jersey, Carter and his friend were were convicted of the murders by an all-white jury largely on the testimony of two thieves who later recanted their stories.

After years of appeals, Carter was released in 1985 when his conviction was set aside.

He was memorialized in Bob Dylan's song "Hurricane" and the movie "The Hurricane" starring Denzel Washington.
