The Florida Attorney General's office is appealing a Monroe County judge's decision to strike down the state's ban on gay marriage.

Judge Luis Garcia ordered Monroe County to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples starting Tuesday.

But the appeal triggers an automatic stay which puts those plans on hold.

A Key West couple, Aaron Huntsman and William Lee Jones (pictured), filed the lawsuit earlier this year.
The case will go to an appellate court in Miami, where a decision could take months, and could end up in the Florida Supreme Court.

While Judge Garcia's ruling only applies to the Keys, the appellate court's decision would apply to the entire state.
