Alden's Box Office Report: 'Good Boys' Party Hard In 1st Place

It was a great weekend for our new, raunchy, middle school comedy, and we're really psyched about it. Good Boys has come out on top! Of course, the wild, snarky middle school kids weren't alone at the box office, but it still wasn't a strong weekend overall. Let's take a look at the Top 3!

As we stated above, the Seth Rogen produced film, Good Boys took the #1 spot. As we said, comedies haven't done that well lately. They've been in a bit of a low spot, unfortunately. As The Hollywood Reporter noted, this was a "much-needed boost for the comedy genre." It's really cool to see people getting out there and supporting a film that isn't a box office juggernaut. I mean, we all like franchises here. We love comic book films, big space epics, and your spy series. But it's still important to keep the middle movies alive! Well done, America. Ya done good.

One interesting thing to note from THR's report: "Universal had a great weekend overall, becoming only the second major Hollywood studio behind Disney to boast $1 billion or more in 2019 domestic ticket sales (Disney's slice is more than $2.8 billion)."

In second place for the weekend was Hobbs & Shaw. The spin-off action film has performed steadily, and there's really no shame in falling a slot at this point. It earned an estimated $14.1 million. They've still made enough to all but guarantee a sequel. Now there's probably going to be two Fast franchises!

And then there's the powerhouse. The irresistible force that is Disney. The Lion King STILL reigns, even in third place. The photo-realistic remake has already earned a ton of cash, and now Jon Favreau and his team can say that they cleared $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office. So even if you're sick of the Disney remakes, and many people are: They have 1.4 billion reasons to keep making them. So definitely look out for Mulan and all of the other titles in the works.
