Castronovo Musings: The Battle Over Fat Shaming

FAT SHAMING?

Listen, I've been a fan of Bill Maher’s comedy for a long time. That being said, his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, can sometimes put me to sleep with the constant political arguing. So, when he went on his rant about how “we should bring back fat shaming," I thought it was a joke. It had to be, he’s a comedian. But there was nothing humorous about the segment. He was saying that obesity is an epidemic and we have gone soft on fat people, and we should start “shaming them” into losing weight.

Well, that’s when late night TV host James Corden stepped up and said “wait a minute." And I have to agree with Corden. Hey Maher, shut the f*ck up! If you think mocking an overweight person is what it’s going to take get them into shape, you’re sorely mistaken. I mentioned this on the show a couple days ago: The quickest way to get me to eat an entire pizza with a side of cake, is to mock me for being fat. Trust me, we know we need to lose a few lb’s, we have mirrors, we shop for clothing, we know. There’s a reason I’m at the gym everyday. It’s a struggle.

Listen Bill, we all have our issues. I am a loyal husband, I am not violent, I love my family, I'm not a drug addict, or an alcoholic. I’m a good provider and I try to make people laugh everyday. However, I guess I eat too much and need to lose weight. Here’s my message to Bill Maher: I will try to avoid desserts, cut out carbs, and hit the gym 5-6 days a week. But will you try not being an a-hole?
