Sometimes I have to pinch myself. I’m a lucky SOB. I stumbled into a career that has been remarkably rewarding. Not necessarily financially, although that doesn’t hurt, it’s the people that I’ve become close to along the way.
I’ve developed 30 plus year friendships with people that, if I wasn’t in this position, I never would have met.
For instance, Zoo Miami legend, Ron Magill. I was invited to his surprise birthday party Saturday night, it was a small group but all fellow broadcast types and all really cool ass people. Again, I’m from Central Islip, Long Island and Lake Worth, Florida. How did I end up here?
Ron Magill and I were at the University of Florida together, as was NBC 6 reporter Ari Odzer, fellow Newsman Michael Williams (now at WPTV in West Palm), but none of of knew each other then, but now? I love these guys! Funny, we have lots in common professionally, yet all we do is crack each other up.
Then there’s Kerry Sanders from NBC the network; we’ve known each other professionally but never socially, man did we have some fun together.
Finally, there’s Dan Lebatard. When I started my radio career down here, at WSHE, Dan was a young sports columnist at the Miami Herald. Now look at him! Nationally syndicated radio and TV star on ESPN, and he’s as down to earth and hilarious as he was when we first met.
It was a special night with a special group of people who all have one thing in common: our love for the Worlds Largest Cuban!
