Papa's Pilar Rum Fishing Report (4/23/21)

RJ Boyle | Lighthouse Point

Fishing is Great Now!

Pictured here is a swordfish we caught this week aboard the vessel “Perseo”. This was the very first fish caught on a new Viking sportfishing boat owned by Luis Ortiz from Mexico. What a way to break in a new vessel! The “Kona Blue” out of Lighthouse Point caught 3 swords the same day up to 150lbs with Mike Golden and Capt. Drew Kettlehut. There are still swords rolling through so give it a go.

Farther inshore the yellowtail snapper bite was on fire all week with big tails up to 24 inches being caught off north Boca. A north tide condition is a must to catch yellowtailing at its best.

Big kingfish have also been a hit this week with fish being caught up to 30lbs. The best depth for the big kings has been shallow around 100 feet of water. These big kingfish have been caught using live bait. The kings caught trolling this week were much smaller averaging around 8 to 10pounds.

Mahi Mahi and blackfin tuna are also being caught close in on the troll. We are seeing quite a few smaller dolphin this year but they still make great tacos!

The yellowfin tuna bite in the channel is still on fire and the afternoon/evening bite has been red hot. There have been a few 50-70 pounders caught but the fish this year seem to be mostly in the 30-40 pound range. If you are going to venture over to Bahamian waters be sure to clear customs before fishing!

Fish are biting so it’s time to get out there!

Get tight!
