The Day the British Conquered America

On July 16, 1983 the British invaded the U.S., at least on the pop charts. 20 of the 40 positions on the Billboard Top 40 chart were taken up by British artists!

The takeover was made up by the most positions held by the nation in the U.S. charts ever. At the top spot was The Police, with "Every Breath You Take," followed by The Kinks with "Come Dancing", Elton John with "I'm Still Standin", Rod Stewart with "Baby Jane", David Bowie's "Let's Dance" was at 31 and "China Girl" was 38, Def Leppard's "Rock Of Ages was at 34, Billy Idol was at 36 with "White Wedding", and E.L.O. rounded things out at 39 with with the Rock 'n' Roll Express Entrance Theme favorite "Rock 'n' Roll Is King".

Pop acts made up the rest of the 20, which wasn't to crazy to fathom since the decade was in the middle of the rise of the Synth Pop bands out of the UK. The Beatles led the way with the initial British Invasion back in the 60's and by 83 the U.S. was bombarded by a new British Invasion on both the rock and pop side, brining the U.S. into an English Summer.
