Papa's Pilar Rum Fishing Report (07-18-25)

Snapper fishing is heating up all over south Florida!

You always hear me talking about migration and cycles of behavior when it comes to fish. Swordfish catches have been down, but snapper catches have been skyrocketing. This is a picture from last week down in Key West. I was fishing with a guy that specializes in catching big bottom fish named Kody Michael. He has a charter operation called "First Light" out of the Hurricane Hole marina. We probably caught 10 to 15 snappers like the ones I'm holding in this picture. These were some of the mutton snapper I've ever caught on the bottom. This weekend you can drift or anchor anywhere inside of 150 feet and most likely have success on a nice mutton snapper. The yellowtail snapper fishing is also really really good right now from 75 feet to 100 feet of water. For the mutton snapper we usually fish a live ballyhoo or pinfish from a 30-foot fluorocarbon leader with a sliding egg sinker.

As for trolling and live baiting the wahoo are still biting, and the small blackfin tuna are abundant. I will be out Swordfishing on Saturday and Sunday so call the shop for a report on Monday.
