Black Hairy Tongue: A Freaky New Affliction

A report coming from Local 10 ABC tells the tale of a truly unnerving, gross, and unexpected affliciton that's been giving people pause all over the country: Black hairy tongue. It sounds like something out of a bad episode of The Twilight Zone or Doctor Who, but it's real. Very real.

Dr. Yasir Hamad, an assistant professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, examined a patient with this strange problem and determined that it was a regular case of what's known casually as "black hairy tongue." But before you get too freaked out, it isn't actually hair. The blackness is basically a cluster of discolored, minuscule bumps.

So, you know, bad. But not THAT bad. People with this condition, like Dr. Hamad's 55 year old female patient, can feel nauseous and experience bad tastes in their mouths. Apparently it was the first case Hamad had ever seen. But don't worry, if this happens to you, it is reversible. Be mindful of your body!
