Rays End Homestand With Another Loss To Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers (44-33) defeated the Tampa Bay Rays (40-34) 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Tropicana Field. The win gave the Brewers a sweep in the short two-game interleague series, and the Rays finished an eight game homestand 4-4.

After Rowdy Tellez homered in the second to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead, Taylor Walls hit a two-run double in the fourrth to give the home team a 2-1 lead. In the top of the fifth inning Luis Urias hit a two-run homer that gave Milwaukee a 3-2 lead, but the Rays tied it in the bottom of the fifth Wander Franco hit a RBI double to tie the game 3-3.

It would be late homers for Milwaukee that would be the difference, as Rowdy Tellez hit his second homer of the night in the eighth inning to break the tie and make it 4-3. Then Jace Paterson homered in the ninth to make the score 5-3, which would be the final margin.

The Rays got a pair of runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't do anything with them as Josh Hader worked out of trouble to close the door and pick up his 24th save of the year for Milwaukee.

Jalen Beeks got the start on what was essentially a bullpen day, pitching two innings in which he allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out four and walking one. Calvin Faucher (1-2, 9.00) took the loss after allowing Tellez's second homer in the eighth inning.

The Rays now begin an eleven-game, three city road trip when they go on the road beginning on Thursday. The first leg of the long road trip is a five-game series with the Blue Jays in Toronto running Thursday - Sunday, with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch on Thursday night is scheduled for 7:07 PM - pregame coverage begins with Jay Recher hosting the Inside Pitch at 6:00 PM on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620.
