What do you think went down at the "bleakest album release party of all time"?
From the minds behind independent music magazine Loud And Quiet, iHeartRadio presents Midnight Chats, "the podcast where musicians talk nonsense at midnight. And intimately about their lives and creativity."
This week's episode, "Sleaford Mods on 10 years of Divide & Exit, and one very bleak album launch," zooms in on Sleaford Mods' frontman and lyricist Jason Williams' account of "the bleakest album release party of all time" thrown after the release of the band's breakthrough album Divide & Exit in 2014.
Per the episode summary:
"As Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods release a 10-year anniversary edition of their breakthrough album Divide & Exit, frontman and lyricist Jason Williams revisits the album that changed his life, the time he threw the bleakest album release party of all time, and how he finally found success in his 40s on his 7th album. "
Podcast hosts Greg and Stu described Sleaford Mods' music as "aggressive" and "sweary."
"It's very it's blunt, and it gives off the impression that the man who's written it is probably going to smash your head in." Williams however, they decided from previous chats, is a very sweet individual with a personality that does not entirely reflect the harshness of his lyrics.
So what happened (or didn't happen) to make the band's album launch the bleakest in music history?
The artist took listeners back in time to when the band had no fans, and it was just him and his mate.
"I think after the Originator, I remember I had an album launch which consisted of me and a mate in the pub and we did some wiz and it was just launch. Yeah, it was just depressed albums."
You can't have an album launch without fans! Or...can you?
