Miami Dolphins, AARP Foundation Gear Up For 5th Annual Million Meal Pack

On Sunday, the Miami Dolphins are teaming up once again with the AARP Foundation for the 5th Annual Million Meal Pack at Nova Southeastern University. 

The AARP Foundation and the Miami Dolphins have are hoping to increase the social bonds and economic opportunities that prevent isolation in older adults and help reduce senior poverty.

Participants, including Dolphins members, fans, community members, and more, will pack more than 1 million meals to benefit adults throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.

Volunteers will work an assembly line, combining ingredients to make one million(+) nutritious meals of rice and beans that will then be delivered to those in need by U.S. Hunger to Feeding South Florida’s network. 

"Senior hunger is a real problem in this nation, with over 10 million older adults struggling with hunger each and every day," AARP Foundation President Lisa Marsh Ryerson explained to WIOD's Erica Rodriguez. "In fact, in Florida, one in five older adults is classified as food insecure."

Volunteers are also invited to take part in a Community Fair as a thank you for their service, complete with live music, football activities, performances by the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders and chances to win prizes. 

The festivities take place this Sunday at 3301 College Ave. in Davie, with the first meal-packing shift beginning at 7:45 a.m., according to an event website

Last years event resulted in 1,003,680 total meals!
