Bystanders could only watch as a home collapsed into the Mendenhall River in Juneau, Alaska, amid major flooding and erosion caused by a new glacier lake outburst flood.
This kind of flooding occurs when a dam containing a glacial lake breaks. Alaska's Suicide Basin has been releasing glacier lake outburst floods that cause inundation along Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River since 2011, according to the National Weather Service.
