Nearly 80 Dogs Brought Back To Palm Beach County From Texas

Dozens of dogs from shelters in Texas are now in Palm Beach County, thanks to the work of an animal rescue.

Volunteers from Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Loxahatchee Groves arrived on Wednesday with 78 dogs.

The group left for Texas on Sunday, then dropped off pet food, water and blankets at animal rescue facilities in the Lone Star state. They picked up adult dogs and puppies after hearing from animal shelters that were overcrowded, with no heat and no water for the dogs.

The deadly winter storm left pipes frozen and shut off power to millions in the state.

Big Dog founder Lauree Simmons says they had no choice but to travel.

"How can you not help? How can you not go help when you have the ability to. I feel Texas would do the same for us."

She says the dogs are being checked by veterinarians and will be put up for adoption in a few weeks.

Two or three more trips to Texas are being planned to rescue more dogs.

Simmons is asking for cash donations to help cover fuel and other travel expenses.
