The Miami Heat have made one of the biggest moves in franchise history, acquiring two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and NBA champion Giannis Antetokounmpo along with veteran forward Bobby Portis Jr. from the Milwaukee Bucks.
In exchange, Miami is sending Tyler Herro, Kasparas Jakučionis, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kel’el Ware to Milwaukee, along with three first-round draft picks in 2026, 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round pick swap and a 2033 second-round pick.
Heat President Pat Riley called the deal one of the most significant transactions the organization has ever completed.
“The announcement of today’s trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. is one of the great trades in HEAT history,” Riley said. “In my opinion, Giannis is one of the top five players in the league and Bobby is one of the best power forwards.”
Riley also acknowledged the players leaving Miami, thanking Herro, Jakučionis, Jaquez Jr. and Ware for their contributions to the franchise.
A Generational Talent Heads to Miami
Antetokounmpo arrives in South Florida as one of the most decorated players of his era. The 2021 NBA champion and Finals MVP has also won two league MVP awards, a Defensive Player of the Year award and has been selected to 10 NBA All-Star teams.
Last season, the 30-year-old averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game while shooting a career-best 62.4 percent from the field. He became the first player in NBA history to average at least 25 points while shooting better than 60 percent from the floor in three consecutive seasons.
Antetokounmpo leaves Milwaukee as the franchise's all-time leader in points, rebounds, assists, blocks, field goals made, free throws made, triple-doubles, minutes played and games played.
The superstar forward will wear No. 34 with the Heat.
Portis Adds Veteran Depth
Portis joins Miami after averaging 13.7 points and 6.4 rebounds in 67 games last season for Milwaukee. Known for his energy and toughness, the 11-year NBA veteran shot 48.8 percent from the field and 45.6 percent from three-point range.
Portis played a key role in Milwaukee's 2021 championship run and has established himself as one of the league's most productive reserve players. He will wear No. 95 with the Heat.
End of an Era for Herro
The trade marks the end of Tyler Herro's seven-year tenure in Miami. Drafted 13th overall in 2019, Herro became one of the faces of the franchise, earning NBA Sixth Man of the Year honors in 2022 and an All-Star selection in 2024.
Herro averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists across 394 regular-season games with the Heat.
Miami also parts ways with former first-round picks Jaquez Jr., Ware and Jakučionis as the organization pushes all-in for another championship run.
With the acquisition of Antetokounmpo and Portis, the Heat have dramatically reshaped their roster and signaled their intention to contend for an NBA title immediately.
