Elsa Claims A Life in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE -- Mayor Lenny Curry told reporters Wednesday evening that Tropical Storm Elsa had claimed a life in his city.

Curry says the driver was struck and killed by a falling tree in the Ortega area Wednesday afternoon.

Elsa caused other damage through the city. Some damage was reported to an apartment building near Powers Avenue, and the Red Cross is assisting. The National Weather Service says downed trees and debris were reported near University Drive and I-95. The NWS says radar showed a debris ball consistent with a tornado in the 5400 block of Tifton Avenue and the 5300 block of Kennerly Road. It will conduct a tornado survey in that area.

Power lines went down along Phillips Highway. As of 8:30 Wednesday evening, Jacksonville Electric Authority reported more than 4,200 customers without power.
