Kurt Cobain Celebrates A Birthday Today

The legend of Kurt Cobain has long been chronicled as he is heralded as being the definition of Generation X. Kurt formed Nirvana in 1987, and quickly became part of the bubbling Seattle music scene that is the birthplace of grunge. The band would make their debut with "Bleach" in 1989 on Sub Pop Records, but after adding Dave Grohl to cement the power trio, Nirvana would hit it big with the single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from their now iconic album Nevermind in 1991. The band and the album would dominate rock music throughout the early 90's as Nevermind became the biggest selling album of its time.

The band would follow the success of Nevermind with "In Utero", powered by the Courtney Love inspired "Heart-Shaped Box". It's at this time the trio became a foursome, by adding Pat Smear from The Germs, and put on a classic performance on MTV's Unplugged, where Cobain performed his cover of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World".

Although hailed as the voice of his generation, Kurt was uncomfortable with his massive success, and his struggle with heroin and chronic depression would lead to his death at the age of 27 from a self-inflicted shotgun wound. After his death his influence would influence, not only a new generation of rock artists, but new subgenres of of pop, rock, and hip hop. Nirvana would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 2014, as Rolling Stone included him on its list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time.

Today we celebrate the legend who's music still lives on to this day.
