In 2006 The Sex Pistols told the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to stick it, as they refused to show up to their induction. The ceremony would be attended by fellow inductees Black Sabbath, Blondie, and Herb Alpert, but the British punk band would instead post a message, that they hand wrote on their website, which said,
'We're not your monkeys, we're not coming. You're not paying attention'.
Those words in particular from John Lydon himself. The Pistols were fine with putting their past behind them, as they sold the rights to their back catalogue to Universal Music Group for a sizable sum, making back all the money they didn't make when they were one of the most infamous bands in all of England.
"once you want to be put into a museum, Rock & Roll's over; it's not voted by fans, it's voted by people who induct you ... people who are already in it." Steve Jones said.
The Sex Pistols are without question one of the most important bands in both Punk and Rock history, so their induction was inevitable, but how artists are chosen and who gets in is annually debated and rarely, completely satisfied.
For the Pistols it was truly, "Never Mind The Bollocks"!
