Today Stevie Nicks Played The Player By Going To The Top Of The Mountain

In 1977 Fleetwood Mac hit big with their only #1 single "Dreams".

The song is regarded as one of the greatest songs of all-time, but should also be classified as one of the greatest diss tracks of all time. To say that the making of the album "Rumors" was a tough task is an understatement since, each member of the band was either going through or already had gone through a divorce. In the case of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, the two were going through and finalized their divorce.

Lindsey Buckingham, becoming jealous of the close friendship of Nicks and engineer/producer Ken Callat, wrote a viscous attack to Nicks with the song "Go Your Own Way". The song that eventually became a classic for the band was Buckingham unloading on Nicks who wasn't too happy having to now have to constantly sing the chorus to a song made to attack her. Go Your Own Way came in response to the argument of using the song "Silver Springs", on the album, which was a song Nicks wrote about Lindsey when the two were still together. Buckingham fought hard to have it taken off and this led to more friction between Nicks and Buckingham.

On a day when Stevie was dismissed by Lindsey, as he didn't need her for that day's recording, Stevie would go on her own into Sly Stone's studio where she would compose and write the song "Dreams". The song was a response to Buckingham's attack on Go You Own Way, as she calls Lindsey a player in contrast to Buckingham calling her a slut on Go Your Own Way. Both songs would end up on Rumors and Go Your Own Way would be the lead single, The song would become a smash hit, breaking into the top 10 making it one of the band's highest charting singles ever. As an extra insult to Nicks, Buckingham got Silver Springs added as the B-Side to the single, which in turn got Nicks to push for Dreams to be the next release. The song would come out in March and by June it hit #1 on the charts, making it the only Fleetwood Mac song to do so. It's become one of the band's most successful singles finding it's way back on the singles charts on various occasions and becoming one of the most streamed songs on the internet.

Rumors was reality television caught on wax and the passion and anger of the band is on full display for everyone to see and hear, as Dreams is the shining star of that story. Stevie Nicks turned her off hand dismissal into one of the greatest songs ever written and would mark another notch on her belt that would lead to the Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

Play on player.
