Slain Hillsborough Deputy's Identity Released

UPDATE: Hillsborough deputies will bring Deputy Bieber's body back from St. Augustine in a motorcade Wednesday. It's due to pass by the District 3 office at 7202 Gunn Highway near Citrus Park Mall around 12:15 p.m. People who wish to pay respects may park outside the Macy's store. There may be traffic delays along the route, which goes from 275 down Bearss Avenue and will go on to Clearwater.

TAMPA -- The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office has released the name of the second deputy found dead in St. Augustine Saturday.

Family members gave approval to identify Abigail Bieber, 30, who patrolled in northwest Hillsborough. She had been a deputy since February of 2018. She often responded to calls related to sexual battery and child abuse, and aspired to become a detective with the Special Victims Section of the Criminal Investigations Division. Co-workers describe Deputy Bieber as someone with a positive attitude who never shied away from tough cases.

Sheriff Chad Chronister called Bieber "an outstanding law enforcement officer" and describes his office as "grief-stricken."

Bieber was one of several deputies spending the weekend in St. Augustine. Other deputies heard an argument between her and Detective Daniel Leyden, with whom she was romantically involved, and then heard gunshots. A preliminary investigation indicates that Leyden shot Bieber and then himself. The St. Johns County Sheriff is continuing to investigate the case.
