Gunman caught after killing beloved dog in kennel at vet's office

Police have arrested a man in connection to the fatal shooting of a dog inside a locked kennel at a South Florida veterinary clinic.

Davie Police announced the arrest of 21-year-old Chayse Billie, who was taken into custody on Tuesday.

Surveillance video captured the shooting at the Aycock Veterinary Clinic around 6 a.m. Friday.

The dog's owner, Daniel Perez, said the gunman discharged a firearm multiple times.

On Tuesday, the dog’s owner, Daniel Perez, reacted to the news of Billie's arrest, telling WSVN “I'm glad that he's been caught and he's not going to hurt nobody else.”

Perez, an emergency medical technician for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and an active U.S. Army Reserves master sergeant, said his Labrador-pointer mix, Matilda, was a friend, loyal companion and therapy dog.

Perez said Matilda helped with his post-traumatic stress disorder from combat in tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, telling WSVN “when I came back from my last deployment, I came kind of broken. She knew when I was down. She knew when I was depressed. She kind of forced me to pet her, and without me knowing, I would pet her, and then I'd be calm, I'd be OK."

On Tuesday, police placed Billie under arrest with assistance from Seminole Police.

He faces a felony charge of aggravated animal cruelty
