Paul Castronovo Musings: What Is The Best South Florida Event?

Sunfest

South Florida is the event capital of the world, from Art Basel, to the Miami International Boat Show, millions of people from around the globe, love to come here to party, with our events as a back drop, so I pose the question, out of the major events down here, which one is the best?

The South Beach Wine and Food Festival: Thousands Flock to Miami Beach to hang with Emeril and gorge themselves on pork belly.

Ultra Music Festival: Thousands flock to Miami to gorge themselves on Molly and listen to EDM.

Art Basel: Your best chance all year to see Leonardo DiCaprio and gaze at amazing art that you can’t afford.

Art Basel

Coconut Grove Arts Festival: Great place to gaze at art you can afford.

Miami International Boat Show: Wealthy South Americans come here to spend their fortunes.

Miami Boat Show

Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show: Everyone else in the world comes here; it’s a party with boats as the back drop.

South Florida Fair: If you wanna eat corndogs, look at livestock and throw up on the Tilt-a-whirl, then you need to go.

The Renaissance Festival: Giant Turkey Legs and Mead, a Game of Thrones fans wet dream.

Nascar at Homestead Miami Speedway: You can feel the speed in your chest. Good ol’ boys and beer.

Delray Garlic Festival: Don’t breathe on anyone.

Seminole Tribal Fair: You can watch a guy get his finger bitten off by an alligator.

Cayo Ocho: 8th street goes off in a sea of tube tops, and arepa’s. Amazing.

Sunfest: A weeklong bash along the intracoastal in WPB, with multiple bands every day, floating bars, lots of food and art to gaze at.

Sunfest

Tortuga Music Festival: Bro country at it’s finest, on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale.

Winterfest Boat Parade: A South Florida drinking tradition, millions line the intracoastal to watch boats lit up with people that are lit up riding on the boats.

Winterfest Boat Parade

Columbus Day Regatta: Once they took the nudity and curtailed the deaths, it’s kind of lost its luster.

Pompano Beach Seafood Festival: Every now and then they get a great band or two; the seafood is awesome. Last year they moved it to the Pompano Amphitheater, I hope it goes back to the beach.

Pauly’s Picks:

I’m sure I am missing some, like the air shows, but there are two of them and it gets confusing…This is tough, and I’m not sure that you can name the best, but just looking at the list, I am leaning towards...

  1. Sunfest, it’s the only music festival that I know of that lets you come and go as you please, so you can roam around, watch your favorite band, hit a bar or restaurant on Clematis, and slide right back in. I’ve seen the Doobie Brothers, Billy Idol, Bad Company, the Allman Brothers, Steve Miller and many other amazing bands, and the price is right.
  2. South Beach Wine and Food Festival. Where else can you hang with Emeril, Guy Fieri and Martha Stewart? One night we stumbled into Emeril’s restaurant in the Lowe’s at midnight, he showed up and cooked us a crazy meal. That stuff happens there.
  3. Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show: Hey, I’m a fisherman and love to look at the boats, but it’s not just the boats, but the gear…from Sunglasses to Fishing Poles, to electronics to booze, this one has it all.
