Catching a wahoo was the goal for the day as neither father or son had ever caught one. Tony asked me earlier in the week if I thought we could catch one and I replied “of course”. Well, let me tell you that it is not that easy most times.
The moon phase here really needs to be right and you really should fish right at the beginning of the outgoing tide to really have a shot. The day before we had only caught a handful of fish but I had a feeling that today we would get lucky! We left the inlet at 9am which is actually a little late as the wahoo bite usually is best at sunrise. We put the baits out right outside Hillsboro inlet with the other fifty boats and began to troll north. As I scanned our spread making sure that everything looked right I was surprised when the long planer rod tripped and the reel began screaming line. We hadn’t been fishing for five minutes and we had this smoking bite! Cody Bandura our mate instantly screamed “Wahoooooo” as the rod started showing signs with head shakes indicative of a wahoo. Christian Davis was cranking the reel and his smile was epic! We boated their first ever wahoo and we all screamed with joy. Tony yelled “thank you Jesus, we’re gonna eat good tonight!”
As for near shore fishing the bite has been kind of slow with a few sailfish and blackfin tuna being caught. This upcoming cold front should really improve the fishing.
Offshore the swordfish catches just keep pouring in. Several fish over 300 pounds were caught again this week and the “Young Guns” team with Hunter Irvine, Tim Maddock Jr. and crew boated a beast weighing in at 767 pounds. This is the largest swordfish caught on rod and reel in our area ever. These guys are at the top of the list when it comes to talent. Congratulations on a wonderful catch!
