Merry Christmas and a Mahi New Year!
Pictured here is Gavin Heale with a beautiful bull mahi-mahi caught aboard the Datsnasty out of Hillsboro Inlet. We were in search of swordfish this day well offshore. On the way out to the swordfish grounds we stopped on some floating debris which consisted of seaweed and floating boards. As we approached the debris we trolled by it first to see if we could pick up a mahi but we had no luck. We figured we would stop next to it and drop down a jig for a wahoo which usually hang out deep under the debris. We were sitting there jigging when all of a sudden several mahi surrounded the boat. They would not eat dead ballyhoo. They would swim up to the bait and immediately turn off of it. We see this non eating activity around the full moon as mahi feed in the night with the brightness of the moon. They get full and picky in the daytime. Thank God for us we had live bait with us and as soon as a bait hit the water it was on!
We caught several fish up to 20 pounds and continued on to the swordfish grounds where are we caught two fish over 100 pounds. What a day it was! Now that the weather has subsided we should see some excellent fishing this weekend both inshore and offshore for mahi, wahoo and swordfish. Looks like we will be having fish for Christmas dinner!
Merry Christmas everybody stay safe and tight lines!
